St Ives Town enjoyed an upturn in form during their final few games of the season to ensure they preserved their Southern League Premier Division status.

Going into the Easter fixtures, things were looking ominous for the Ives as just three points separated them from the bottom four and the relegation zone. However, back-to-back wins against Tamworth and Royston ensured that the Ives just needed a point from their final home game of the season against Bedford to be safe. They duly delivered with a 2-0 victory that will see them finish comfortably clear of the drop zone.

It has been a season of ups and downs for the Ives. The campaign saw a bright start followed by an excellent FA Cup run where they reached the fourth qualifying round of the competition, the furthest they have gone in their history. Unfortunately, they could not progress to the first round as they lost out to FC Halifax Town. Participation in the FA Trophy was brief due to an early elimination to Belper. But apart from a dip in form during February and March, the Ives were always around 12th place in the league.

Away from the first team, the reserves have had a steady season in the Cambs League Senior B Division. The highlight of their programme was winning the Percy Oldham Cup as they overcame the challenge of Melbourn last month. Meanwhile, the Ladies first team are seeking a top-three finish in Division One North of the Eastern Region Women’s Football League.

On the pitch, there will now be a pause in activity until the pre-season programme gets underway again in July. Off the pitch, the men’s first team had an average attendance of 257 during the season, which is roughly the same as the previous campaign. But encouragingly, the attendances for the last three home games of the season were around the 400 mark. This provided a great atmosphere inside the ground, and the club will be looking to sustain this once the new season gets underway in August.

There will also be plenty of off-the-field fundraising activities during the closed season. A quiz night, a race night, and the annual golf day are all planned. 

The golf day is being held at Lakeside Lodge at Pidley near Huntingdon on 12 May and is normally one of the biggest fundraising events the club organises during the year. With almost 30 teams already registered to play, it promises to be an excellent day, and fingers crossed for a decent weather forecast! This year, teams will be playing for the Carl Circus Trophy, named after a loyal supporter of St Ives Town, who sadly died a few months ago.

So, plenty going on during the closed season.
